1. VISUAL & PERFORMING ARTS PARTICIPATION

The visual and the performing arts are beautiful and powerful tools in educating about cultures. AAWSG has organized, sponsored, or co-sponsored several art exhibitions and performing arts programs through the years.
 
 
Art Exhibitions
  • Forces of Change: Women Artists of the Arab World 1995
    This traveling exhibition of more than 150 contemporary artworks by Arab women artists toured the United States in 1994 & 1995. It was Organized and sponsored nationally by the International Council for Women in the Arts. The exhibition was shown at Nexus Contemporary Arts Center (currently the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center) and at the Gwinnett Fine Arts Center (currently the Hudgens Center for the Arts).
    In addition to sponsoring the show in Atlanta, AAWSG sponsored two teachers' workshops and two children's workshop that complimented the exhibition

  • Folk Art of the Arab World 1995
    This exhibition was organized and sponsored by AAWSG as part of the 1995 Arts Festival of Atlanta. The displays included beautiful and elaborate arts & crafts works from countries of the Arab world. Several performing arts programs complemented the exhibit including folk dancing and traditional costume shows.

  • The Arabs: An American Story 2001
    This exhibition complemented a symposium coordinated by a graduate student at Georgia State University, Department of Anthropology. The exhibit was shown at the Atlanta International Museum of Art and Design. AAWSG provided artifacts highlighting the history and culture of the Arab American community in Atlanta. In addition, AAWSG provided speakers for the symposium in a panel discussion about Arab American women.

 
Performing Arts Festivals
  • Atlanta's International Festival
    1985-present
    The task of promoting the Arab culture is best achieved with AAWSG's participation in international festivals organized by the different schools and universities throughout Metro Atlanta. In these festivals, AAWSG presents an educational booth highlighting the crafts and traditions in the Arab world. In addition, the society offers food tasting, a short musical program, a traditional costume show or folk dancing.

 

  • AAWSG Youth Dabke Dance Group
    AAWSG youth members established this Arabic folk dancing group in 1999 as part of the performing arts participation of the society. The group has been representing the society at international festivals and other cultural events.
    Their recent participation in 2002 include Dekalb World Party, sponsored by Dekalb Council for the Arts, and The Black Arts Festival, sponsored by the city of Atlanta.

  • Arabfest 1997
    This festival focusing on the Arab culture was organized and sponsored by AAWSG at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. AAWSG presented a traditional costume show and several workshops for adults and children.

 

  • Festival of Trees 1997-present
    This annual nine-day festival, held at Georgia's World Congress Center, draws over one hundred thousand visitors each year. The proceeds benefit Children Healthcare of Atlanta. AAWSG sponsors and decorates a vignette at the international area with a theme focusing on Christian and Muslim Holiday Celebration in the Arab world.

  • International Folk Art Fair 1998
    This Fair was organized by the Atlanta History Center. The society presented a traditional costume show and a program about the rituals of new birth celebration in Egypt, also called the Souboua ceremony in Arabic.
